Hello True Tigers! Did you guys know that this upcoming Sunday, September 12th is the National Day of Encouragement? Granted, I did get this information from a list of “Weird Holidays in 2021,” so bear with me. Regardless of whether or not this holiday is even real, I still love the sentiment of encouraging others.
As True Tigers, it is impossible to uphold Mizzou’s values of Responsibility, Respect, Discovery and especially Excellence without feeling our very best. Even though it is only the third week of the semester, homework, projects, quizzes, exams, work, relationships and much more may have us already feeling overwhelmed and discouraged about the semester. That is why I wanted to share 12 affirmations (in honor of the September 12th holiday) that you can repeat to yourself each day to remain encouraged and motivated this semester.
What is an affirmation?
An affirmation is essentially a way to practice self-empowerment through positive thinking. It allows people to maintain a positive mental attitude as they work towards their goals in life. Typically, people will verbally or mentally recite affirmations to influence their mindset for the days, weeks or even months ahead. Affirmations are largely effective because of the way they are often recited with conviction, as if the statements are true and happening in the present tense.
While I like to credit myself as being a genius most times, I do want to acknowledge the immense help I had from the U.S. Oral Surgery Management site (I know, seems random) when it came to coming up with the following affirmations. The mind is one of the most powerful muscles in the body. Taking the time each day to intentionally work that muscle can yield some awesome benefits in the long run. Affirmations are some of the best ways to exercise your mind by fixing your thoughts on the best parts of life and yourself.
If you would like to recite these or simply just read them, I hope you use these to get one step closer to feeling encouraged and empowered to rock this semester!
12 Affirmations for Self Encouragement
One small positive thought in the morning can change my whole day. So, today I rise with a powerful thought to set the tone and allow success to reverberate through every moment of my day.
I am getting better and better every day.
I can be whatever I want to be.
I am not defined by my past; I am driven by my future.
I am intelligent and focused.
I do not waste a single day of my life. I squeeze every ounce of value out of each of my days on this planet — today, tomorrow, and everyday.
I belong in this world; there are people that care about me and my worth.
I am constantly growing and evolving into a better person.
I’m freeing myself from all destructive doubt and fear.
I must remember the incredible power I possess within me to achieve anything I desire.
I finish what matters and let go of what does not.
Today will be a productive day.
Hopefully these made you feel at peace, even if it was for the 30-60 seconds you read over them. When Sunday rolls around and it’s officially the National Day of Encouragement, take some time for yourself and make sure that you are feeling encouraged for at least part of the day. We are constantly expected to be happy and ready to go about life with so much energy and enthusiasm, but that is just not realistic. Quite frankly, it is hard to have a positive effect on others when you’re not even feeling empowered yourself! However, the best part about affirmations: they last forever!
