Five Ways to Practice Gratitude on Campus

1. Create a Gratitude Journal

Start each day by acknowledging all of the things you are grateful for! Making a gratitude journal is easy. All you’ll need is a pen and paper. At some point every day, make time to write down at least three things that make you happy. Taking a moment to recognize all of the things - big or small - that positively impact your life is the perfect mood booster! A gratitude journal will help you focus on the love that surrounds you, and as your list grows, so will your inner happiness.

2. Buy a Stack of Thank You Cards

Create a goal to give out a certain number of Thank You cards during the month of November. A handwritten letter of gratitude goes a long way. It can be a great mood booster for both the sender and the receiver. Whether it’s your roommate that helped you with a favor or your advisor who helped you craft the perfect schedule for next semester, you can’t go wrong by saying thank you!

3. Host a “Friendsgiving”

Say thank you to your friends by organizing a Friendsgiving celebration to honor the impact they’ve made in your life. The party can include a potluck style dinner, movies, games and more! Get creative by decorating your dorm or apartment with fall decorations and print out pictures of friends to place around the room. Make a point to go around the room and say what you are thankful for during the special night.

4. Volunteer

Find a local non-profit that interests you and sign up to volunteer. Give back to the Columbia community by sharing your talents with others. Whether you have a knack for working with kids, hold a special place in your heart for animals or you’re just a great conversationalist, there are organizations that could use your help! It will feel good to help those in need, and volunteering is a great way to get in the holiday spirit.

5. Try Something New in Columbia

Getting to know your community on a deeper level is a great way to practice gratitude. Be thankful for all of life that surrounds you by getting out of your comfort zone or making a point to experience something new. From restaurants to nature trails to shops, Columbia has a lot to offer. Living in a college town is something to be thankful for. Show gratitude for this city by experiencing more of it!
