Happy May, Tigers! Wow, it seems like April just flew by! With the end of the semester on the horizon, many of us are anxious to relax and enjoy a nice, long summer break. These next few weeks are about making it through the long haul and really grinding so that our time off is worthwhile.
Let’s face it, we all need help getting through these last few weeks of school. However, there are also hundreds of people in Columbia and millions of people around the world who also need our help. So, in the spirit of helping people, let’s look at a more in-depth list of whose lives we could improve this May.
1. Mizzou students
Finals week can be daunting every year, but doing finals from home?! That’s a first. However, it is important to note that anything is possible and that it is absolutely possible to not just complete your finals, but ace them from the comfort of your own home. The first step is to plan. Make a schedule of what finals you have, when they are occurring, and how long you have to complete them. It might even be helpful to do your finals in an area of your home that you do not visit often so that your brain can associate everything related to finals with this spot.
When it comes to studying, keep this in mind: study smarter, not harder! If you are low on time or even motivation, try reviewing the topics that are confusing and not everything in the class. If you have an open notes assessment, take extremely detailed notes and study those notes so that when the test comes, you not only know the information, but you know exactly where it is just in case you forget something. Remember that repetition is key. Old-fashioned methods of notecards or practice problems should be embraced during this time. Also, don’t underestimate the power of (virtual) groups! Teaching someone else the material or even reviewing with multiple people is another great way to reinforce information and encourage each other during finals season. You got this!
2. Columbia High School Seniors
One of AASB’s very own, Allie Pigg, recently spearheaded an initiative to honor 2020 Columbia seniors unable to finish off the semester in class and have a formal graduation ceremony. She and her former classmate, Drew Morris, created a website profiling seniors at every high school in Columbia. Seniors from Hickman, Rock Bridge, Douglass, Battle and Tolton High Schools can participate. This incredible idea allows students to fill out a form to create a personal profile with pictures, extracurriculars, college plans, accomplishments, and more. This “digital yearbook” is a genius way for seniors to not only feel included, but to connect with other seniors and celebrate each other’s achievements in high school.
How can you help? Spread the word! Be sure to encourage as many seniors you know to take part in this amazing opportunity! The website is called COMO Seniors 2020 and can be visited here: https://comoseniors2020.wixsite.com/classof2020.
3. Local Columbia businesses
A great way to help the Columbia community is by supporting local businesses. Thankfully, ABC 17 News recently compiled a detailed report of a list of Boone County businesses staying open during the COVID-19 outbreak! Their site is called Open4Biz Mid Missouri and lets users locate local businesses by typing in a category/business/keyword and their location. They are then directed to a list of open businesses serving the public during this time! If you are in Columbia and are interested in trying this out, visit https://columbia.open4biz.us/.
4. Mothers!
Let’s not forget one of the very best parts of May: Mother’s Day! This is a very special holiday because it gives us the opportunity to celebrate the mother figures who make our lives great every day. This could be your own mother, a grandmother, an aunt, a teacher, a coach, a neighbor - anyone! Take some time this year to help the mothers in your lives feel loved. This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 10th. If you are reading this, there is still time to do something special without leaving the house! Did someone say DIY? That’s right! What better way to profess your love than with an original, homemade gift? For those of us who will literally not be stepping foot out the front door in the next few weeks, the NY Post has compiled a list of DIY Mother’s Day gifts that can be made completely at home. For those of us who love to online shop or who are willing to make a quick run to the local Target, here are 50 gift ideas from Women’s Health Magazine.
Ok, here’s a homework assignment. Look at this list and think of one person to help this month! Then, do it! As the iconic cast of High School Musical says: We’re All in This Together!
