For many college students, getting into the holiday spirit is not always easy. There are finals to deal with, classes to finish, and plenty of homework to catch up on. Not to mention, many students are celebrating away from home, friends and family. Thankfully, Columbia, Missouri offers no shortage of ways for Missouri Tigers to celebrate the season.
1. Holiday Home Tour
From Friday, December 6th through Sunday, December 8th explore the homes and Christmas decor from four Columbia residents. The event is hosted by the Missouri Symphony League and will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. On this tour, you will hear about the architecture, interior designs and the stories behind the holiday decorations of each home. To purchase tickets you can visit all Columbia Hy-Vee Grocery Stores, McAdams, and D&H on Broadway. You can also purchase tickets online. Ticket prices are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
2. Christkindlmarkt
Günter Hans will host its fourth annual Christkindlmarkt on Friday, December 6th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will take place in the back patio of Günter Hans. There will be booths from vendors Ophelia's Flowers, Amplified Productions, Koeze Nuts, Mid-Missouri Wood Carvers, Optimist Club (Christmas Trees), Antics Crafts, UkuleleKaty Designs, Acorn Crafts and Senza Gluten-Free Foods (Christmas cookies), as well as hand-crafted, hand-painted ornaments by Christopher Scott Alexander. Admission to the event is free.
3. Living Windows & First Friday
On Friday, December 6th, in the heart of downtown Columbia, guests will be able to experience the magic of Christmas and the arts. Columbia Missouri’s The District shares that there will be “live performances, open houses, shopping, snowflakes on Broadway, the Magic Tree and visits with Santa.” This event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, click here.
4. Jingle Bell Run
Give back at the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run. The 5K will take place Saturday, December 7th. Check-in is at 7:00 a.m. and the race will begin at 8 a.m. Participants are encouraged to get festive and wear a holiday costume to the event. 5. Great Russian Nutcracker
This holiday season give your family the gift of Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker on Wednesday, December 11th! Step into a simpler time filled with sweet dreams and Christmas magic. Enjoy world-class artists, over 200 dazzling costumes, stunning sets, towering puppets, and soaring birds. The show will be performed at Jesse auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online.
6. Christmas Brew 'N View
Join the Blue Note on Thursday, December 12th for a Brew N’ View. The event includes a double feature of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer + Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town. The Blue Note also plans to transform the venue into a Christmas wonderland. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will begin at 7 p.m. The show itself is free and open to all ages. 7. 80s VS 90s: Ugly Sweater Ball at The Blue Note
Bust out your favorite holiday sweater and head over to the Blue Note for a festive rendition of 80s v. 90s on Saturday, December 21st. There will be holiday-themed drink specials, decorations, and retro jams with DJ Requiem busting out classic music videos on the big screen. Wear a Christmas sweater for FREE cover, and let's fill the dance floor full of retro holiday cheer! The event is for 18+ and begins at 9 p.m. Additional information can be found here.
