No dear, there's Spring Break at home!

Happy Spring Break, Tigers! By the time you’re reading this blog, I hope that your last midterm is over and your Canvas notifications are off. Even if you’re not quite at this point in your break yet, I hope you all stay safe over the break whether you stay in Columbia or have to travel.

You know that feeling when you ask your mom for McDonald’s and she says no because “there’s McDonald’s at home?” In this same fashion, we would like to share a creative list of 5 makeshift things to do over break that can basically be done anywhere!

1. Hiking - The great thing about hiking is that it doesn’t have to involve any formalities. If you want to find a mountain to hike up, you can! If you want to stick to small nature trails or the woods in your backyard, that’s an option too! If you’re staying in Columbia, I suggest taking a look at our last blog for some super cool hiking spots less than 5 minutes from campus (shameless plug)!

2. Roller Skating - Not only is roller skating a tremendous workout, but you can literally do it anywhere. While I would not suggest doing so in a house or really any other building, pretty much any other area is fair game! If you want to make it a socially-distanced group event, check out some nearby roller rinks for loads of fun that way!

3. Bowling - Grab your friends and comfy socks and head to a bowling alley this Spring Break. No matter where you are, you can always find a random bowling alley on the side of the road sure to create some lasting memories. Even if you would rather bowl at home, Wii Sports Resort has a pretty world-renowned bowling alley too (or so I’ve heard). Wii aside, you can even take some empty water bottles and an old ball and have a DIY bowling tournament anywhere you are.

4. Photoshoot - Our generation is definitely a big proponent of the ‘if I didn’t get a photo, it didn’t happen’ mindset, and honestly, that’s not an awful way of thinking. A photoshoot, if nothing else, is a great way to keep track of your experiences over break and the people you shared them with as well. No need to call a professional photographer (even though TTN boasts a few), just whip out your cell phone, find some good lighting, secure a decent backdrop and get to clicking!

5. Cooking - Despite what anyone says, cooking is an art form. Having the skill to create a dish from scratch meant to satisfy hunger is super impressive. That’s why taking the time to perfect your cooking skills over break is something I would suggest for everyone. In fact, if I can recall correctly, TTN just posted a myriad of recipes in honor of TTN Etiquette Week on their Instagram! A short trip to @truetigernet on Instagram is a first-class ticket to yummy and affordable treats! Check them out!

Who else is super excited? If you’re a Type A person like me, it is always nice to have some structure or organization - even over break! For those of us not so tightly wound, that’s okay too! We just wanted to compile this list for anyone looking for ways to safely seize the day from any location. Enjoy your break Tigers - you deserve it!
